Refinishing

The average cost of ceramic tile refinishing is $720 for the Austin area or $6 per square foot. Projects typically run $400 on the low end and $1500 on the high end.

It’ll take 2-4 hours for a crew to complete most reglazing projects. Then, you’ll need to wait anywhere from 24 to 72 hours depending on the specifics of your project.

Several factors go into how long your reglazed tile will hold up. The quality of the installation is the biggest factor and maintenance is the second most important.

A poor job with minimal cleaning or harsh cleaners will only give your tile about 5 years of life. On the other hand, a great installation with regular maintenance can last you up to 20 years.

Replacing

Replacing tile usually comes out to $1250 or $10.5 per square foot. Although, prices can range anywhere from $600 to $3000.

A team can generally wrap up the tiling within 8 hours. After that, you’ll need to wait at least 24 hours before using the area and sometimes up to 72 hours.

Durability of replaced tile is about the same as refaced tile. Some contractors claim that replaced tile lasts a bit longer, but we’re not able to confirm that.

Painting

Painting your tile is your cheapest option with an average of $480, and this expense can range from $200 to $1200.

Just be cautious of the cheaper options because the quality of the application of the paint heavily influences how long it will hold up.

The tile usually only takes a couple hours to prep and paint and you can start walking on it within 24 to 48 hours.

Tile that’s painted will last about 2 years, but it could also last only 6 years or up to 3 years depending on foot traffic and well the paint was applied.

Now you have the facts and it’s clear that refinishing your tile is a much better option than replacing or painting. Replacing tile should only be done for severely damaged tiles. Painting tile may be a bit cheaper and faster, but it gets worn out even faster.
